Red wine gets its staining power from a combination of natural pigments called anthocyanins, tannins that bind rapidly to fabric fibres, and the natural acidity that helps those pigments set. The longer it sits, the deeper it binds. But treated correctly and immediately, even a generous pour on a white shirt is recoverable. Here is exactly what to do.

01 Blot Immediately - Never Rub

The moment the spill happens, act. Every second the wine sits in the fabric, the anthocyanin pigments are binding more deeply to the fibres. Use a clean cloth, paper towel, or napkin to blot firmly from the outside of the stain inward - never rub. Rubbing spreads the stain laterally and drives the pigment deeper into the fibre structure simultaneously. Blotting lifts. Rubbing embeds.
Remove as much liquid as possible before doing anything else. The less wine in the fabric, the less there is to treat. If you're at a restaurant or event without access to treatment supplies, blot as much as you can and keep the stain damp until you can treat it properly - a dry set stain is significantly harder to remove than a damp one.
If you have club soda available at the scene, pour it directly onto the stain after blotting. The carbonation helps lift pigment from fibres before it can bind. It is not a miracle solution - but it buys time and improves the outcome of the treatment that follows.
02 Flush with Cold Water from the Back

Take the garment to a tap and flush cold water through the back of the stain - pushing it out the way it came in, not forcing it further into the fabric. This is a critical detail most people miss. Running water through the front of the stain drives it deeper; running it through the back pushes it out.
Use cold water only. Hot water is the most common red wine stain mistake - heat causes the tannin proteins in red wine to denature and bond permanently to fabric fibres, setting the stain in a way that no subsequent treatment can fully reverse. Cold water keeps the stain in a treatable state.
Why cold water - the science
Red wine contains both chromogens (colour-carrying compounds) and tannins (naturally occurring polyphenols). Heat causes polyphenols to react with fabric proteins and form permanent bonds - the same process that makes tea stain a mug. Cold water prevents this reaction and keeps the pigments in suspension, where Aromiq™'s enzyme formula can reach them.
03 Cover Generously with Salt

While the fabric is still damp, pour a generous layer of table salt directly over the stain and press it firmly against the fabric. Salt is hygroscopic - it actively draws liquid out of the fibre and into the salt crystals. Left for two to three minutes, it absorbs a significant portion of the remaining wine before it can bind further.
After two to three minutes, brush the salt away cleanly - don't rub it into the fabric. Check the stain. If it's visibly lighter, the salt has done its job. If significant colour remains, rinse with cold water and repeat with fresh salt before moving to the pre-treatment step.
White wine poured over a fresh red wine stain is a well-known folk remedy. It works partially - the water content dilutes the stain and the acidity of white wine can help lift pigment. But salt is more effective and less wasteful. Skip the white wine and go straight to salt.
04 Pre-Treat Before the Machine

After salt treatment, the remaining stain needs a pre-treatment before it goes in the machine. Two options, depending on what you have available and the fabric type:
Dish soap: Apply a small amount of washing-up liquid directly to the damp stain and work it in gently with your fingertips or a soft cloth. The surfactants in dish soap are highly effective at breaking the bond between wine pigments and fabric fibres. Leave for five minutes, then rinse cold before washing.
Bicarbonate of soda paste: Mix bicarbonate of soda with a small amount of cold water to form a thick paste. Apply to the stain, press gently into the fabric, and leave for ten to fifteen minutes. The alkalinity of bicarbonate neutralises the acidity of the wine and helps lift pigment. Rinse cold before washing.
For stubborn or slightly set stains
Mix three parts hydrogen peroxide with one part dish soap and apply directly to the stain. Allow to sit for thirty minutes before rinsing. Hydrogen peroxide is a mild oxidising agent that bleaches the wine pigment without the fibre damage of chlorine bleach. Always spot test on an inconspicuous area first - hydrogen peroxide can lighten some dyed fabrics.
05 Wash Cold with an Aromiq™ Pod

Once pre-treated, the garment is ready for the machine. Place an Aromiq™ pod in the empty drum first, load the garment, and wash on cold. 06 Check Before Drying - Never Dry a Set Stain

If the stain is gone: dry normally. If any trace remains: repeat the pre-treatment and wash cycle before drying. A second treatment catches what the first loosened but didn't fully remove. Most residual staining after a correctly treated first wash will come out in the second cycle.

Natural daylight is the best way to check for residual staining - artificial light often masks faint traces that will become visible once the garment is worn. Hold the damp garment up to a window before deciding it's clean.

Adapting the Method for Different Fabrics

The core sequence above works for most everyday fabrics. For specific materials, adjust as follows:

Cotton and linen

The most forgiving fabric for red wine. Follow the full sequence without modification. Can withstand the bicarbonate paste and dish soap pre-treatment without damage.

Denim

Treat immediately - denim's dense weave traps wine pigment quickly. Follow the full sequence. Wash inside out on cold. Air dry to preserve colour.

Silk

Blot only - no rubbing, no salt (abrasive on silk). Flush gently with cold water from the back. Hand wash in cold water with a tiny amount of mild detergent. No heat, ever.

Wool and cashmere

Blot, cold flush from back, very gentle dish soap pre-treatment. Hand wash in cold water - never machine wash wool on a standard cycle. Lay flat to dry.

Synthetic blends

Follow the full sequence. Avoid hydrogen peroxide - it can affect some synthetic dyes. Salt and dish soap pre-treatment followed by a cold Aromiq™ wash handles most red wine staining effectively.

White cotton

The highest-stakes scenario. Follow the full sequence, then if trace staining remains after washing, apply hydrogen peroxide directly and leave for 30 minutes before a second wash. Never bleach - it yellows white cotton over time.

What never to do with a red wine stain
  • Never rub the stain. It spreads the pigment and drives it deeper into the fibre simultaneously.
  • Never use hot water. Heat sets tannin-protein bonds permanently. Cold water only, throughout the entire treatment.
  • Never dry the garment before confirming the stain is gone. Heat fixes whatever pigment remains beyond recovery.
  • Never use chlorine bleach on coloured or delicate fabrics. It removes the stain and the dye together.
  • Never leave it until later. A ten-minute delay doubles the difficulty of removal. Every minute counts.

The Questions People Actually Ask

Can you remove a dried red wine stain?

Yes - but it requires more effort. Re-wet the dried stain with cold water to rehydrate the pigment, then apply the hydrogen peroxide and dish soap mixture and leave for 30 to 60 minutes before washing. Results improve significantly if the stain has only been dry for a few hours. Stains that have been through a dryer cycle are the most difficult and may require professional treatment.

Does salt actually work on red wine?

Yes - with important caveats. Salt works by absorbing liquid from the fabric before it can bind permanently. It is most effective on fresh, wet stains where there is still free liquid to absorb. On a stain that has been sitting for more than fifteen minutes, salt is less effective - move directly to the dish soap pre-treatment instead.

Does Aromiq™ remove red wine without pre-treatment?
